Pita Bread: The Staple of Greece
Pita bread is just simply amazing and yummy. Pita has been a staple in many kitchens and is a big staple in mine. I usually eat it as a snack with roasted garlic hummus, fresh dill, and some vegetables. If that doesn't sound good, then you must be crazy!
Pita bread is generally known to be from the Greek culture. And, if you believed that, you would only be partially correct. Pita actually is a common flatbread in much of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North Africa. Really, it's a multicultural food and that's what makes it a heavy hitter - it goes great with many dishes.
I find that if I make a dozen they will last a week or so. You can freeze them just like any bread but freshness is key.
It really isn't hard to make the dough, bake them, and store them for the week's nibbles and lunches. Of course, don't mention this secret to any Greek friends of yours as they might slap you. Bread in Europe and the East is always eaten fresh and I agree!
